How to Sign In to the Remote Computer Lab

Body

The Remote Computer Lab is a collection of virtual Windows 11 PC computers that provide 24/7 remote access to Windows computer lab software. All UWSP students and employees whether on campus, at home, or elsewhere off campus can sign in to a remote lab virtual computer.  Software available through the Software Center can also be installed.

If you intend to remotely use an application that requires video hardware acceleration like Adobe After Effects or Adobe Premiere, expect performance to be degraded. We recommend using an on-site campus computer when working with these applications.

Multifactor Authentication is required when signing into the Remote Lab.

IMPORTANT: SMS and phone calls do not work as a default MFA method for this remote service.  Students who have SMS or phone calls set as default for their MFA authentication will be unable to access the Remote Lab until their default authentication method is set to the Microsoft Authenticator (MFA) app

Information Technology strongly recommends that you set your default authentication method to the Microsoft Authenticator (MFA) app so that you receive push notifications to your mobile device.

If you must use a hardware token verification code as your secondary authentication you will need to install and use this intermediary service to complete your sign in.

One-Time Setup

>> Macs only:  Macs should first download and install the Microsoft Windows App from the App Store before continuing.  UWSP Information Technology supports the three latest Mac OS versions.

PCs/Macs:

  1. Go to https://remotelab.uwsp.edu.
  2. Sign in with your UWSP account and MFA.
  3. Select UWSP Standard Remote Lab.
  4. Download the remote desktop configuration file.

Start A Remote Lab Session

Once you have downloaded the remote lab configuration file, you can start a remote lab session whenever it's needed.

  1.  Locate the configuration file in its download location.

The downloaded configuration file name is:  cpub-UWSP_Standard_Re-UWSP_Standard_Re-CmsTempVm.rdp

  2. Open the configuration file.
  3. Click Connect and sign in with your UWSP account.

The Microsoft Remote Desktop session window will open and automatically sign you into a random remote lab virtual computer. An HVBROKER1.UWSP.EDU tab displays at the top of your remote session window letting you know that it is active. Your own computer desktop remains open behind this session window.

Minimize/Close Your Remote Lab Session

The HVBROKER1.UWSP.EDU tab that displays at the top of your remote lab window lets you know that your remote session is open and gives you options to temporarily minimize the remote session or end the remote session.

On the right of the HVBROKER1.UWSP.EDU tab:

  • Click the underscore "_" to minimize your remote session and access your computer's desktop.
  • Click the "x" to disconnect and sign out of your remote lab session.
