An Email I Sent Was Returned As Undeliverable. What Do I Do?

If Outlook is unable to deliver your email message, you will receive an email from Microsoft Outlook saying, "Your message to <recipient email address> couldn't be delivered", followed by the reason and suggested steps to help you troubleshoot.

The top-left corner of the undeliverable email Subject line displays the word "Undeliverable: " followed by subject line of your email.

Following are the most common types of undeliverable emails with best troubleshooting steps and recommendations.

Troubleshooting Undeliverable Email Messages

  • Message: "The email address wasn't found."

Do this:  Often, the email address may just need to be corrected.  Instead of using Auto-fill to add the address, try looking the address up in the address book and send again. If you are emailing someone from outside of UWSP, call them to verify their email address. If you continue to receive undeliverable messages, forward the "Undeliverable" message to the IT Service Desk and they will attempt to troubleshoot.

  • Message: "When Office 365 tried to send your message, the receiving email server outside Office 365 reported an error."

This message means that your email may have violated UWSP's email policy or a system error was encountered.

Do this:  Contact the IT Service Desk and they will attempt to troubleshoot.

  • Message: "Access denied, spam abuse detected."

Do this:  Contact the IT Service Desk.

For any other issues, contact the IT Service Desk for help.
