How to Recognize a Phishing Email

Here are some pointers when handling suspicious messages:

🔒 Protect yourself:
  • Don’t click any links
  • Don’t reply to the message
  • Don’t contact any email addresses listed in it
  • Don’t copy and paste any links in to your browser
  • Never share your password — UWSP will never ask for it via email or any form

🛑 Look for Red Flags:
  • Urgent requests for personal information or immediate action
  • Spelling and grammatical errors
  • Suspicious links or unexpected attachments
  • Too-good-to-be-true job offers, especially those seeking personal assistants, or asking for personal or banking info
  • Messages from familiar senders that seem out of character — their account may be compromised. Check email address used to send the message.

If you’re unsure, play it safe — forward the message to phishing@uwsp.edu and we’ll check it out for you.
