Project Status Definitions

Body

Project statuses available differ depending on if the project is

  1. Not Started (i.e., in the initial "Accepted" stage)
  2. Currently executing or execution is scheduled (i.e. in the Initiating; Project Planning; Executing, Monitoring and Controlling; or Closing stage)
  3. Completed (i.e., the Closing stage has completed and all work on the project has ended)

Not started

  • N/A: Planning or work on the project has not started and does not have a scheduled start date.

Currently executing or execution is scheduled

No Issues
  • On Track: There are no significant issue(s) which threaten the scope, budget, or schedule of the project.
Issues
  • At Risk: The project is still controllable, but there is a meaningful chance of missing targets unless corrective action is taken.
  • Critical: The project is already outside acceptable tolerance, or is very likely to miss commitments, and needs immediate escalation or intervention.

At Risk and Critical differ in the severity of the issue based on three factors: severity, immediacy, and recoverability. At Risk indicates a warning with a achievable recovery path inside normal management action. Critical indicates an issue exists that threatens key outcomes, or cannot reasonably be corrected without major decisions, escalation, or rebaselining.

At Risk or Critical statuses should remain in place until the issues have been resolved or changes have been accepted and the project has been rebaselined. Once the issues have been resovled, or the changes have been accepted and project plans adjusted accordingly, the status may return to On Track.

Complete

  • Done: Work on the project has completed.
